From Job Hopping to Intentional Career Change

Not sure if you knew this, but Flow + Fire is not the first business I’ve started. Nope, this ain’t my first rodeo. And let me tell you, I didn’t get here without making an intentional career change.

For 3 years, I was part of the maker community on Etsy and in my city. I’d always wanted to have an Etsy shop and I hoped the creative outlet of making would be a nice little side hustle.

That’s right, I had FOUR in THREE years. Not only did I change the name of the business, but I changed my offerings, branding, and tagline multiple times. I kept changing things because it wasn’t working. And I kept having new ideas about what I wanted.

Mirror, Mirror: My Side Hustle Reflected My Career

Do you know what I didn’t realize at the time? My business changes were mirroring my career change pattern.

In my career, I kept changing jobs, telling myself that THIS one would FINALLY be better.

I’d love the rush of energy of starting something new, but after a while, I got frustrated again. I was deep in the Job Change Cycle

Now don’t get me wrong, job hopping with intention has its benefits. But all of my job changes, followed by a bunch of business changes left me in a VERY frustrated place at the end of 2018.

I was unhappy in my day job, and unhappy in my side hustle. I’d hoped the Etsy side hustle would be THE THING that would help me express my creativity and start to earn enough income that I could finally work for myself. But that wasn’t working either.

What the heck was I supposed to do?

Some Help Please

It took time to figure it out. But I realized that I needed help. So I hired a coach.

I didn’t want to keep going around and around in circles anymore. Trying one thing after another and meeting disappointment after disappointment.

Deciding to work with a coach was scary as hell. I was worried that this might be one more thing I was trying, adding it to the list of all the other things I’d tried.

I was terrified that this wouldn’t work either.

BUT. Working with a coach changed everything. I had to dig deeper into myself and into what I really wanted my life to look like.

I had to slow down.

I had to sit with difficult questions and do a lot of inner work. And honestly? That has made all the difference.

When I launched Flow + Fire in 2019, it was from a place of deep knowing that I was on the right path. MY path.

I was no longer throwing things at the wall and hoping something would stick. I was moving forward intentionally.

Slowing down is the best thing I’ve ever done for my career.

Taking the time to reflect on the most important questions helped me move in the direction I needed to.

What about you? Are you sick of changing jobs or businesses?

Isn’t it time to slow down and reflect on what you really want your life to look like?
